How To Build A Successful Salon Team

How To Build A Successful Salon Team

Whether you are just starting out with your salon venture, or your salon has been up and running for decades, both scenarios require the need for a successful team! Building a successful team can be a long-winded and mundane process, especially as hair stylists are always coming and going. Here, at Hairdressing Supplies Lincoln we recognise this strain, and that's why we have put together a short blog to help you out!

FIND THE PERFECT EMPLOYEE

When building a successful salon team, the most important thing is to make sure you hire the right people. Obviously, this can be easier said than done… as you may know from previous experiences. However, to minimise the risks of hiring the wrong person, the key is to attract your desirable candidates in the first place.

Although, you may now find yourself asking how you can find these perfect employees. Well, the most important thing here is to have a vision of your perfect team and recognise what type of employees that you want behind your salon chairs. When posting a job advertisement, you need to be completely truthful and specify who and what you are looking for! As much as you want to give everybody a chance, you need to narrow it down to who you actually want in your salon!

RETAIN YOUR EMPLOYEE'S

Finding the perfect employee for your salon is hard enough, but the next challenge you may face is retaining that amazing hair stylist.

Many of you reading this will have had employees come and go after a period of time, whether that was 6 months, 2 years or even 10 years! The thing is, it is really important to understand that life can get in the way! Whether your employees are having babies, or following their dreams, you cannot guarantee to always have a low turnover rate.

However, although there are no guarantees that your employees will be with you for decades, there are a couple of important things that you can bring to your salon to maximise the chances of this.

  1. Boost salaries: Okay, so this one may not be possible for all of those reading this blog. However, if you do find that business is booming, then try boost your employees salaries if possible. An employee who is recognised and rewarded for their hard and continued work is more likely to stay with you and your salon for the long run.
  2. Build work relationships: Building work relationships can be a lengthy process, however they are so important! When employees feel connected to their company because their fellow co-workers have become family, they are less likely to leave that job role.
  3. Offer education & training opportunities: Since training makes employees feel more appreciated and motivated, this is a key element when trying to increase employee retention. Training allows individuals to feel empowered and confident in their job role, allowing for the potential of moving up in the ranks. This therefore makes it much more likely that your employees will stay with you for a long period of time! Investing in your stylist is a great benefit for your salon too as your customer will receive a better quality of service too.

ALWAYS SET YOUR SYSTEMS AND PROCESSES

Nobody wants to be that boss who’s always nagging, however to build a successful team it is super important to set your expectations on how things should be done. This is not only for your new members of staff, but for existing ones too!

As a salon owner or manager, you need to make sure everybody on your team is on the same page as yourself. It is so important that all of your team members agree on your expected goals for the company. Make it clear and apparent to your staff what their work is going towards and what your expected results look like! Remember, a team without a goal to work towards will more likely work against each other, rather than together!

Once you establish your company’s way of doing things and you all relate to a common goal, you will start noticing that you and your staff are performing together as a team!

Although the above are a few tips to help you to build your dream team, the most important thing to remember is to always be true to what you want from your business! The tips in this blog are only a small portion of the numerous ways that you can actually build a successful team. The best and most efficient thing to do is to see what works for you (as a salon owner or manager) and what works the best in regard to the business overall!

We hope you have enjoyed this short blog, and it has inspired you to make the changes in order to build a successful team!
